Refunding an EasyCard (ending the contract and returning the whole balance) costs a NT$20 handling fee, but the fee is waived if the card has been used 5 times or more and for 3 months or more. For a normally readable unregistered card, you can go to an information counter at a Taipei Metro station, where a balance of NT$1,000 or less is refunded in cash on the spot. Above NT$1,000 the counter does not handle it and you must apply on the EasyCard company's website; for NT$3,000 or more the law does not allow cash, and the money can only be remitted to the cardholder's own account. Registered cards and damaged cards must be forwarded (後送) or mailed to the EasyCard company. For checking the balance there are several free ways: the card inquiry machines at Metro stations, convenience store kiosks, the Easy Wallet app or the website.
Note: A refund requires you to "lock" the card (鎖卡) first, and after locking the card can no longer be used; apart from a full refund, the EasyCard company will not refund only part of the balance. For co-branded cards, student IDs, senior citizen cards and other partnership cards, deal with the issuing organization first. The fees here follow the EasyCard company's user terms (the May 2023 edition, version 112.05) and its website; the terms say that fee changes must be announced 60 days before they take effect, so rely on the company's latest announcement; 24-hour customer service 412-8880 (add 02 when calling from a mobile phone).
How to Check Your EasyCard Balance
| Method | What you can see | Fee |
|---|
| Watching the screen of the fare gate or the payment device when you tap | The available balance on the card | Free |
| Metro station "card inquiry machines" and information counters | Transaction records and the stored value balance | Free |
| Easy Wallet app | Enter the card number (for a registered card, also the birthday): the balance and transactions from the previous 3 days to the previous 3 months before the query date | Free |
| EasyCard website "query transaction records" | Transaction records, the card balance, and past transactions from the previous 3 days to the previous 1 year | Free |
| 7-ELEVEN ibon | The latest 6 transactions (shown on screen); you can pay to print the details for the previous 3 to 30 days | Query is free; printing is NT$4 per page |
| FamilyMart FamiPort | The latest 6 transactions, and the latest 1 top-up and the balance | Free |
| Applying to the EasyCard company for a written record | Transaction records within the past 5 years | NT$20 for page 1, NT$5 per page from page 2; free if it is verified to be an over-deduction |
If the query asks you to enter a birthday, it means the card has already been registered.
Where to Get a Refund: Taipei and New Taipei Locations and Amount Thresholds
| Card status | Where you can go | Notes |
|---|
| Working normally with a balance (unregistered) | The EasyCard customer service center at the Taipei City Hall bus station, the passenger information counters at Taipei Metro stations, and the passenger information counters at Taoyuan Metro stations; outside the area there are also Taichung Metro and some bus company service centers | NT$1,000 or less is refunded in cash on the spot; above NT$1,000 the counter stops handling it and you apply on the website instead |
| Faulty cards or registered EasyCards | Customer service centers and Taipei Metro station information counters for "forwarding" (後送), or mail it by registered post, with postage paid by you, to the EasyCard company (4F, No. 3, Yuanqu St., Nangang District, Taipei City 115) | Put the cardholder's name, mobile number, remittance bank, branch and account number in the envelope; for a registered card, attach the holder's own account |
| Cannot go in person | The EasyCard website "card refund application" (退卡退費申請) | The refund can only be remitted to the cardholder's own financial account; do not throw the card away until the refund is completed |
| Co-branded EasyCard (issued by a bank) | Use the EasyCard top-up machines at Taipei Metro stations and some car parks, or FamilyMart FamiPort, to operate "EasyCard refund" (悠遊卡退卡), or contact the issuing bank | The balance is refunded through the issuing bank to a designated account |
Differences between Taipei and New Taipei: the official refund locations are "all Taipei Metro stations" and the customer service center at the Taipei City Hall bus station; the list does not include convenience stores, and it does not include the stations of the Circular Line, the Danhai light rail and the Ankeng light rail operated by the New Taipei Metro company. People living in New Taipei can go to the information counter of a station in New Taipei that is operated by Taipei Metro (for example the New Taipei stations on the Bannan Line, the Zhonghe-Xinlu Line and the Tamsui-Xinyi Line), or apply directly on the website. For refunds of NT$3,000 or more, the law does not allow returning the money in cash.
EasyCard Fees at a Glance
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|
| Refund (handling fee for ending the contract) | NT$20 | Waived if the card has been used 5 times or more (inclusive) and for 3 months or more (inclusive) |
| Fee for reporting lost (no replacement after the report) | NT$20 | A registered card, or a card that may legally be reported lost; the contract ends after the report |
| Replacement or reissue after reporting lost | NT$100 | Ordinary cards not issued in partnership with the government, schools, telecoms or banks; co-branded cards follow the bank's rules, capped at NT$200 |
| Registration service fee | NT$50 listed in the terms | The EasyCard registration service webpage announces that from August 1, 2016, all registrations are free of charge |
| Card handling fee for a card that will continue to be used after a refund request | NT$50 | For cards the EasyCard company confirms can continue to be used |
| Written transaction records | From NT$20 | NT$20 for page 1, NT$5 per page from page 2 |
| Refund that is not made on site | Postage or transfer fee | Deducted from the refund amount; the terms' example uses registered-mail postage of NT$28, subject to the post office's announcement |
An example from the terms: with a card balance of NT$100, used fewer than 5 times, and a request to mail the refund notice by registered post, the refund = 100 - 20 (handling fee) - 28 (registered-mail postage) = NT$52.
Registration and Reporting Lost: Can You Get the Money Back If You Lose the Card
- Unregistered cards: losing one or having it stolen is like losing cash; you cannot report it lost to stop payment or get the balance refunded.
- How to register: apply on the EasyCard registration service webpage or in the Easy Wallet app; you need an ID card (for foreign nationals, only a residence permit with a chip, 晶片居留證, is accepted); each card can be registered only once, and after registration it cannot be changed back to unregistered or passed to someone else to use.
- How to report lost: a registered card can be reported lost on the website, or by calling the 24-hour customer service and passing identity verification. After the report is completed, losses from misuse are borne by the EasyCard company, but for 3 hours after the report, losses from transactions that are not online real-time ones (such as tapping at the Metro or on buses) are borne by the cardholder. Even if you find the card after reporting it lost, the report cannot be cancelled and the card cannot be used again.
- For partnership cards, go to the issuer: for senior citizen cards (敬老卡) and "love cards" (愛心卡), after reporting lost, apply for a new card at the district office (區公所) of your place of household registration; for digital student IDs and campus EasyCards, go to the school; for co-branded cards, go to the issuing bank. For the senior card points rules see how many points per month on the Taipei and New Taipei senior card.
Damaged and Expired Cards
- 1-year warranty: under normal use, the card body is under warranty for 1 year from the purchase date (with an invoice) or the EasyCard company's shipping date; a defect in the card itself can be refunded or exchanged free of charge, but you cannot choose the original card design.
- Past the warranty, poor reading: the EasyCard company has no card exchange service; send the card on for a refund and then buy a new card.
- 20-year expiry: the balance does not disappear. You can extend the card free of charge at the checkout counters of the four major convenience store chains, at Taipei Metro stations or at customer service centers, and after the extension it is valid for another 5 years; student cards and concession cards can be charged only at the full fare after the extension. Co-branded cards and social welfare cards follow the original issuing organization's rules.
Check These Things Before Refunding a Card
The following is this article's suggestion, not an official rule:
- Check whether a periodic pass or TPASS is still set on the card, and confirm its validity before refunding; for monthly pass rules see how to buy a TPASS 1200 monthly pass.
- Check the balance and the number of uses first to judge whether you meet the fee-waiver conditions; with a small balance, little may be left after the fee and postage are deducted.
- For registered and damaged cards, prepare your own account details; for student IDs, senior citizen cards and similar, first get a new card from the issuing organization, then cut up the old card and apply for the refund.
- Do not rush to refund before traveling abroad or riding the Airport MRT; the EasyCard can be tapped directly on the Airport MRT, see Airport MRT fares and timetable.
FAQ
How much is deducted for an EasyCard refund?
The handling fee for ending the contract is NT$20; it is waived if the card has been used 5 times or more and for 3 months or more. A refund that is mailed in or not made on site also has postage or a transfer fee deducted.
Can I refund an EasyCard at a convenience store?
The official refund locations do not list convenience stores. For an ordinary EasyCard, go to the information counters at Taipei Metro stations, a customer service center, or the website; a bank-issued co-branded EasyCard can be refunded through FamilyMart FamiPort or the Taipei Metro top-up machines.
If I lose my EasyCard, can I get the balance back?
Only a registered card (or a card that may legally be reported lost) can be reported lost and have its balance returned; the fee for reporting lost is NT$20, and losses from non-online transactions within 3 hours after the report are your own. An unregistered card cannot be reported lost.
How do I get a refund when the balance is over NT$1,000?
The counter stops handling it; apply for the card refund on the EasyCard website, and it is returned by remittance to the cardholder's own account; for NT$3,000 or more the law does not allow returning cash.
Does registering an EasyCard cost money?
The terms list a registration service fee of NT$50, but the EasyCard registration service webpage announces that from August 1, 2016, all registrations are free of charge.
