Is the water heater not hot? Is it broken or is it set wrong? Find out first before deciding whether to repair it or not.

When the cold snap hits, just when you need a hot bath the most, the water heater fails. There is nothing more frustrating than this. But please don’t rush to think that the water heater is broken and you need to spend a lot of money to replace it. Many times the problem lies in some simple settings or consumables. Learning to conduct initial self-examination can help you save a lot of unnecessary expenses and waiting time.

Step 1: Simple self-check list (90% of problems occur here)

Before calling for help, please check the following three things in order:

  1. "Power" check: Is the ignition battery dead?
This is the most common reason, especially when using traditional pulse ignition gas water heaters. When you turn on the hot water and the water heater makes no "clicking" sound at all, the first thing to suspect is the battery. The battery box is usually located at the bottom of the water heater. Open it and replace it with a brand new No. 1 battery and try it. Many masters have shared that this has solved more than half of the "water heater not hot" repair cases.
  2. "Fuel" check: Is the gas supply normal?
    • Using barreled gas: Check whether the gas barrel is empty and whether the switch is fully open.
    • Using natural gas: Although gas interruptions are rare, you can check whether other gas stoves can ignite normally to confirm that there are no abnormalities in the main switch or pipelines.
    • Possible slight air leakage: If you smell gas, please immediately turn off the main gas switch, open doors and windows, do not operate any electrical switches, and contact a professional.
  3. "Water source" check: Is the water pressure too low?
Starting up the water heater requires a certain amount of water pressure to push the internal water plate (membrane). If the water pressure in your home is generally low, or the filter at the water heater inlet is clogged, it may cause the water heater to fail to ignite. You can try:
    • Turn the faucet to full hot water and observe whether the water output is obviously weak.
    • Check the cold water pressure at other faucets to determine whether the problem is with the overall water pressure or just the hot water line.
    • If it is a penthouse or an old apartment, adding a pressurized motor may be the ultimate solution.

Step 2: Understand the types of water heaters and possible faults

If the basic inspection is unsuccessful, you need to further understand the type of water heater:

  • Traditional exterior type (RF type): Relies on natural exhaust. If the installation environment is poorly ventilated (such as surrounded by balcony debris), the combustion efficiency will become worse, resulting in the water not being hot.
  • Forced exhaust type (FE type) and forced exhaust water heater (FF type): The exhaust gas is forced out through the fan, which is highly safe. If the fan fails, the safety device will activate and prevent the water heater from operating. An ignition sound will be heard but then extinguishes.

"Internal fault" signal that requires professional maintenance

If the self-check is ineffective, it may be the following internal parts failure. It is recommended to contact a qualified water, electricity or gas equipment dealer for treatment:

  1. Cracked water pan (membrane): This is the second most common failure. When hot water is turned on, the water flow pushes the water pan to open the gas valve. Aging and cracking of the water pan skin will lead to insufficient thrust. The symptoms are thatthe water becomes very small and the water temperature is not hot or alternately hot and cold. It needs to be disassembled and replaced by the master.
  2. Scaleing or blockage of the heat exchanger (water tank): In areas with hard water, internal copper pipes are prone to accumulation of scale, which affects the heating efficiency and leads to insufficient water temperature. Requires professional cleaning.
  3. The burner or the flame cap is clogged: Dust or spider webs may block the air outlet, causing incomplete combustion. The flame will be yellow-red instead of blue, and the heating efficiency will be greatly reduced.
  4. Electronic control panel or sensor pin failure: For models with constant temperature or digital display, computer board failure will prevent correct adjustment.

Safety comes first, when should it be replaced rather than repaired?

According to the recommendations of the Bureau of Standards and Inspection of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the service life of gas water heaters is generally 5 years. After the age, even if it can be repaired, the safety risks caused by aging parts (such as carbon monoxide leakage) will greatly increase. If your water heater is old and often breaks down, investing in a new forced exhaust thermostatic water heater will not only be safer, but also provide better comfort and energy saving, and will be more cost-effective in the long run.

In short, don’t panic when the water heater is not hot. Most simple problems can be solved by self-checking in the order of "electricity → gas → water". When it comes to internal components, trust professionals and put safety as the highest consideration, so that you can enjoy every hot bath with peace of mind in the cold winter.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs' latest "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" and the key points of electricity safety in old houses

Due to the popularity of high-power household appliances (such as air fryers, microwave ovens, dishwashers, instantaneous electric water heaters, and IH furnaces) in recent years, the Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has revised the "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" many times to strictly require the diversion and protection mechanisms of residential electricity circuits. Statistics show that more than 30% of building fires in Taiwan are caused by electrical factors, among which "old wire insulation deteriorates and short circuits", "socket contacts are oxidized and loose, poor contact" and "non-fuse switch (NFB) overloaded and failed to trip" are the three main fatal causes.

Old apartments in Shuangbei that are more than 30 years old have a total original designed power capacity of only 30A to 40A, and several rooms often share the same 1.6mm or 2.0mm circuit. In the modern standard safety configuration, kitchen electrical cabinets, bathroom equipment, and air-conditioning and heating machines must all be equipped with 5.5mm² dedicated circuits (single circuit and single socket). It is recommended that the main switch box be upgraded to a busbar (Busbar) integrated distribution board, and the total amperage is increased to 75A or 100A (a qualified electrical appliance contractor needs to be entrusted to Taipower to review the additional power capacity).

Residential electricity self-test and regular inspection checklist

  • Appearance and temperature of the socket: Touch the outer cover of the commonly used socket lightly with the back of your hand. If it feels lukewarm or if you find that the plastic socket is yellowed and charred, or the plug is loose and shaking after being plugged in, it means that the internal copper plate clamping force is exhausted or the contact resistance is too high, and you should immediately cut off the power and replace it.
  • Regular testing of leakage circuit breakers (ELCB): For leakage circuit breakers in humid places such as balconies, bathrooms, and kitchen sinks, regulations require that the "TEST button" on the switch be pressed once every 1 to 3 months to confirm that it can automatically trip and cut off the power supply instantly.
  • Serial connection and overloading of extension cords are strictly prohibited: Extension cords should be purchased with 2.0mm thick wire diameter products that have CNS certification and automatic overload power-off protection. Do not share the same extension cord with high energy-consuming appliances to ensure zero hidden danger to life and property at home.

🇹🇼 Expat Living Note: Home Repairs in Taiwan

If you are an international resident renting an apartment in Taipei, New Taipei, or anywhere in Taiwan:

  • Voltage & Electrical Safety: Taiwan standard household voltage is 110V (60Hz). Do not plug 220V imported European/UK appliances directly without a certified step-up transformer.
  • Plumbing Terminology: Local plumbers are called 水電 (Shuǐdiàn) and handle both water and electrical repairs.
  • Landlord Obligations: Under Article 429 of Taiwan Civil Code, landlords are legally responsible for repairing natural wear and tear (such as hidden wall pipe leaks, water heater faults, or booster pump failures) unless explicitly waived in your lease.
