In condominiums and elevator buildings in Taipei and New Taipei, "kitchen odor backflow" is a pain point that many residents have been troubled by for many years but have never been able to find the root cause. During the dinner rush, the smell of oil smoke, spices, and even the unpleasant second-hand smoke from the neighbors next door or downstairs will be faintly wafted from under the range hood of your home. Many people think that the range hood has insufficient suction or the filter has not been washed, but in fact, the real cause lies in the pressure difference between the public exhaust ducts in the building and the lack of effective air-tight isolation at the junction between the exhaust duct and the wall.

Why does the oil fume from the building pour into your home?

Kitchen range hoods in modern buildings usually discharge oil fumes through aluminum foil ducts into the building's "public exhaust duct room" or exterior wall exhaust hood. Oil smoke backflow mainly comes from three major structural breaches:

  • Chimney effect and positive pressure pushing between ducts: When large-suction range hoods are turned on on multiple floors at the same time, the air pressure inside the public duct room will instantly rise (forming positive pressure). If a household does not turn on the range hood, the turbid air in the duct room will be poured into the room along the air duct.
  • Traditional mechanical gravity check valve seal failure: Most range hoods are only equipped with a simple plastic or thin metal gravity check plate inside. There is no airtight tape on the edge of this anti-return piece. After long-term sticking of sticky oil and dirt, it cannot be completely closed, and may even be blown open by airflow, leaving a gap.
  • The hole in the pipe wall is not sealed and filled: The exhaust pipe penetrates into the cement pipe space or around the opening in the exterior wall. If it is not completely filled with foaming agent (PU Foam) or fireproof mud during the original decoration, oil fumes will leak directly from the ceiling interlayer into the kitchen.

The exhaust efficiency and lifespan of a range hood are highly dependent on the exhaust pipe material and direction:

  1. Pipe diameter coordination:New near-suction or large exhaust volume range hoods mostly use 6-inch (diameter about 15 cm) exhaust ducts. Do not use the large and small head adapter to reduce it to 4 inches in order to pass under the narrow beam, otherwise it will produce wind noise and greatly reduce the exhaust volume.
  2.   • Regular testing of leakage circuit breakers (ELCB): For leakage circuit breakers in humid places such as balconies, bathrooms, and kitchen sinks, regulations require that the "TEST button" on the switch be pressed once every 1 to 3 months to confirm that it can automatically trip and cut off the power supply instantly.
  • Serial connection and overloading of extension cords are strictly prohibited: Extension cords should be purchased with 2.0mm thick wire diameter products that have CNS certification and automatic overload power-off protection.
