I want to change to a toilet without sanitizer in winter, but when I look down, I see there is no socket next to the toilet?
The maintenance-free toilet seat (intelligent warm water washable toilet seat) can provide warm water washing, seat heating, drying and deodorizing functions, and has become a standard equipment to improve the quality of life in Shuangbei homes. However, when the builders of the medieval houses in Taipei and New Taipei that are over 15 years old originally handed over the houses, there were almost no dedicated 110V power sockets reserved around the toilets. Many homeowners couldn't wait to buy a no-treatment toilet seat online, only to find out when the installer arrived that there was no electricity available. Some even pulled an ordinary household extension cord from the bathroom door and plugged it next to the toilet to save trouble, causing a huge risk of electric shock and short circuit fire.
Regulatory red lines and safety taboos in the bathroom electrical environment
The bathroom is an extremely dangerous environment with high humidity, frequent water splashing, and a naked and wet human body (human body resistance is reduced to a minimum). According to Taiwan's "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" and international electrical standards:
- It is strictly prohibited to use ordinary extension cords or multi-hole strips:The internal contacts of ordinary extension cords do not have a waterproof and airtight design. The penetration of water vapor will cause the patina of the metal contacts to oxidize, short circuit and fire; wires soaked in puddles on the ground will cause the entire room floor to become electrified.
- Socket height and waterproof level requirements: It is recommended that the height of additional sockets in the bathroom be at least 110 cm from the ground, and must be away from the direct range of the shower head. An "IP55 splash-proof and waterproof protective cover box" with a spring opening and closing seal must be installed on the outside of the socket.
- Mandatory configuration of dedicated leakage circuit breaker (ELCB): The power circuit that supplies all sockets in the bathroom must be equipped with a high-sensitivity, high-speed leakage circuit breaker (rated operating current 30mA, trip time within 0.1 seconds) at the main distribution box end to ensure that the power can be automatically cut off at the smallest moment of leakage.
No need to knock the tiles! Three compliant and practical bathroom wiring construction methods
If you do not want to destroy the existing tiles and build a large wall, qualified plumbers will usually use the following three safe construction methods to connect the power supply:
- From the mirror cabinet/basin Lighting socket extension wiring:If there is a shaver socket or mirror headlight power supply reserved next to the bathroom sink mirror, you can connect it from the outlet end of the socket and use "PVC" with double-sided waterproof foam glue and silicone reinforcement along the gaps or corners of the tiles. "Flame-retardant and waterproof batten" is beautifully routed to the back of the toilet.
- Running power from the ceiling heater/exhaust fan service hole: There is usually a separate power source for the extractor fan or bathroom heater inside the bathroom ceiling. The plumber can connect the power supply through the ceiling maintenance hole, go inside the ceiling and pull it to the corner near the toilet, and then vertically penetrate the waterproof strip and extend downward to the side of the toilet. The overall vision is the cleanest and simplest.
- Penetrate the wall and draw electricity from the adjacent room (back-to-back wire pulling): If the toilet is right next to the wall socket in the bedroom or corridor, you can ask a plumber to drill through the wall with precise hole cleaning, directly take the electricity from the dry socket in the adjacent room and pass it into the bathroom, and install a waterproof bottom box at the bathroom end, completely eliminating the trouble of open wiring inside the bathroom.
Electrical load considerations for instantaneous thermal vs thermal storage toilets
When choosing a treatment-free toilet seat, the power specification is also a key consideration:
- Thermal storage toilet (power about 300W~600W): It has a small thermal insulation water tank inside, which continuously heats and maintains heat at low power. Although the instantaneous power consumption is low, the water temperature will become cold after 30 seconds of continuous washing, and repeated heating for a long time is relatively power-consuming.
- Instant heating toilet seat (instantaneous maximum power can reach 1200W~1400W): The water flow passes through and is instantly heated by a high-power ceramic heating tube. The warm water is endless and extremely energy-saving. However, because the instantaneous current is as high as 11A~13A, do not connect a hair dryer or a high-power dehumidifier in series at the same time on the power supply circuit to avoid frequent tripping of the circuit breaker.
Installation details of the water inlet tee valve and pipes
In addition to electricity, the water inlet end of the toilet must not be careless. During installation, the original angle valve of the toilet should be removed, and the metal water separation tee and high-density water filter screen that come with the product should be installed (especially for residents in Shuangbei mountainous area or using old reservoirs, installing a special water purification filter element can extend the life of the heater). All screw joints must be wrapped with 15 to 20 turns of water-stop raw material tape (leak-proof tape) and locked in a straight direction. Test with boiling water for 10 minutes to confirm that there is no micro-leakage or dripping before plugging in the power and turning on the device to enjoy a warm and comfortable toilet experience.
