Are extension cords flying all over the place? The electricity dilemma of residents in old houses
In old apartments in Taipei, it is common to have only one socket in a room. Faced with a plethora of 3C products and small appliances, the result is extension cords connected to extension cords, crawling around the corners like spider webs. This is not just a problem of clutter and aesthetics, but also a potential fire risk. But when I thought about having to hire a plumber to knock on the wall, pull out pipes, and redistribute electricity, I felt that the project was huge and expensive.
Isn’t there a middle way? some. Before you decide to go to war, there are several legal, safe and relatively simple "expansion solutions" that can greatly improve your convenience of using electricity. The key is tounderstand the upper safety limits of each method and stick to them.
Option 1: Upgrade your concept of "extension cords" (the most basic but most important)
The problem for most people is not that they use extension cords, but that they use the "wrong" extension cord.
- Abandon the "universal hole" extension cord: The old universal hole that can be plugged into any plug has poor contact and is prone to overheating. It has been eliminated by national standards. Please replace it immediately.
- Choose an "electrician-grade" or "with independent switch and overload protection" extension cord: A good extension cord has a thicker diameter (above 1.25mm²), a safety gate for the jack, and a flame-retardant outer shell. It is best to have an independent switch for each socket, or even a fuse or circuit breaker for the entire cord. It will automatically trip when overloaded.
- Abide by the "one extension, one" principle and the power limit: It is absolutely prohibited to connect multiple extension cords in series! The total power of all electrical appliances on an extension cord must not exceed its rated capacity (commonly 1650W, 15A). For high-power-consuming appliances such as electric heaters, electric kettles, and hair dryers, it is best to use only one wall outlet and do not share extension cords with other appliances.
Option 2: Socket conversion cover (socket clone technique)
This is a simple and magical little thing. It directly replaces your original single socket panel, turning one socket into two, three, or even USB charging holes without moving any wires.
Advantages:Easy to install (you can replace it yourself after a power outage), neat appearance, and no external wires.
Limitations: It does not increase the circuit capacity, it just allows more jacks on the same circuit. Therefore, the total power of all electrical appliances plugged into it after installation cannot exceed the safety upper limit of the circuit (usually 15A, about 1650W). Suitable for charging mobile phones, desk lamps and other areas where low-power electrical appliances are concentrated.
Option 3: Get power from the "light outlet" (advanced DIY or hire a master)
The lamp holder on the ceiling of the old house is actually a power point. You can use it to pull out a new wire and add a new outlet to the wall. There are usually two ways to do this:
- Use a "lamp holder adapter": An adapter that screws directly into the light bulb holder and the other end becomes a socket. This is only suitable for temporary, low-power use and is less aesthetically pleasing.
- Formal rerouting:Ask a plumber to lead new wires from the junction box of the ceiling light fixture, along the wall corner or using a wire trough, pull them to your designated location, and install the new socket panel. This is a "semi-new circuit" because it shares the same fuseless switch as the original lamp. The advantage is that there is no need to touch the main line, and the project is smaller; however, it should be noted that the new sockets plus the power consumption of the original lamps must not exceed the circuit load.
Option 4: Install "power track" or "in-line strip"
This is very popular abroad and in modern decoration. It is a long track fixed on the wall or baseboard, and the socket module can be moved, added or removed on the track at any time.
Advantages: Extremely flexible and modern, the socket position can be adjusted at any time according to the placement of furniture.
Note: It needs to be constructed by a master and the power is connected from an existing socket circuit. Likewise, the total power usage for the entire track is limited by the source loop. It is suitable for desk walls, TV walls and other areas where electrical appliances are densely packed but the power is not the highest.
Option 5: The ultimate solution - add an independent circuit (you have to face it eventually)
If you need to use multiple medium and high-power appliances at the same time in a certain area (such as the kitchen, study room and computer desk), none of the above methods can satisfy it, because they are all limited by the capacity of the old circuit.
At this time, the only safe and compliant way is to add a dedicated circuit from the distribution box. This requires the plumber to run brand new wires (2.0mm or above) through the pipe or use open pipe trunking, connect to your new socket location, and install a new fuseless switch in the distribution box.
This is the most recommended long-term solution: Although the project is relatively large, it completely solves the problem, provides independent, safe and sufficient power, and reserves space for adding electrical appliances in the future. When renovating an old house, "increasing the number of circuits" must be listed as a core project.
Dangerous behaviors that are absolutely prohibited
When looking for solutions, be sure to avoid these landmines:
- Connecting wires from behind the socket by yourself: Without proper insulation and fixation, it is easy to short-circuit and catch fire.
- Use substandard adapters or extension cords without safety markings.
- Pressing the extension cord under heavy objects or carpets for a long time: Poor heat dissipation and the insulation is easily damaged.
- Ignore the temperature of the plug and socket: If the plug feels warm or even hot to the touch, it means a bad contact or an overload, and the load must be reduced immediately and the device replaced.
Convenience of using electricity should not come at the expense of safety. By understanding these plans and assessing your own needs, you can find the smartest and safest way within the constraints of your old house. Say goodbye to cobwebs of wires and embrace a modern life that is both convenient and secure.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs' latest "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" and the key points of electricity safety in old houses
Due to the popularity of high-power household appliances (such as air fryers, microwave ovens, dishwashers, instantaneous electric water heaters, and IH furnaces) in recent years, the Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has revised the "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" many times to strictly require the diversion and protection mechanisms of residential electricity circuits. Statistics show that more than 30% of building fires in Taiwan are caused by electrical factors, among which "old wire insulation deteriorates and short circuits", "socket contacts are oxidized and loose, poor contact" and "non-fuse switch (NFB) overloaded and failed to trip" are the three main fatal causes.
Old apartments in Shuangbei that are more than 30 years old have a total original designed power capacity of only 30A to 40A, and several rooms often share the same 1.6mm or 2.0mm circuit. In the modern standard safety configuration, kitchen electrical cabinets, bathroom equipment, and air-conditioning and heating machines must all be equipped with 5.5mm² dedicated circuits (single circuit and single socket). It is recommended that the main switch box be upgraded to a busbar (Busbar) integrated distribution board, and the total amperage is increased to 75A or 100A (a qualified electrical appliance contractor needs to be entrusted to Taipower to review the additional power capacity).
Residential electricity self-test and regular inspection checklist
- Appearance and temperature of the socket: Touch the outer cover of the commonly used socket lightly with the back of your hand. If it feels lukewarm or if you find that the plastic socket is yellowed and charred, or the plug is loose and shaking after being plugged in, it means that the internal copper plate clamping force is exhausted or the contact resistance is too high, and you should immediately cut off the power and replace it.
- Regular testing of leakage circuit breakers (ELCB): For leakage circuit breakers in humid places such as balconies, bathrooms, and kitchen sinks, regulations require that the "TEST button" on the switch be pressed once every 1 to 3 months to confirm that it can automatically trip and cut off the power supply instantly.
- Serial connection and overloading of extension cords are strictly prohibited: Extension cords should be purchased with 2.0mm thick wire diameter products that have CNS certification and automatic overload power-off protection. Do not share the same extension cord with high energy-consuming appliances to ensure zero hidden danger to life and property at home.
