The dehumidifier cannot be left on for a long time
In Taipei and New Taipei, it is easy to run the dehumidifier for a long time due to the humid and cold winters, rainy season, and typhoons. What is really prone to problems is often not a sudden malfunction of the machine, but placing it too close to the wall, the drain pipe falling off, the filter being blocked by dust, or high-power-consuming appliances being tied together with a string of extension cords. The purpose of dehumidification is originally to take care of the quality of living, but if used incorrectly, it may cause water to soak in the floor, make the corners more damp, and even cause electricity risks.
Choose the right location first: leave space and avoid sources of water and vapor
The air inlet and outlet space should be reserved around the machine according to the product instructions. Do not place it next to the wardrobe, behind curtains or in narrow cabinet gaps. Placing it too close to the wall will affect circulation and make the compressor more likely to operate at high load for a long time. When you have just finished taking a shower in the bathroom or are drying clothes on the balcony, instead of placing the dehumidifier directly in a splashing area, it is better to ventilate it first, close off unnecessary outside air, and then let the dehumidifier work in a relatively dry and safe indoor area.
Wooden floors, carpets and cabinet bottoms are particularly concerned about long-term water accumulation; if you find traces of moisture around the machine, don’t just blame the high humidity. You should immediately check whether the water tank, drain outlet and bottom are leaking.
Continuous drainage is not just about extending the pipe
Some models can be connected to continuous drainage pipes, which is suitable for families who do not want to pour water repeatedly. However, drainage must have a stable drop and fixed points, and the pipeline cannot be flattened, bent, or inserted into airtight drainage holes. If the drain outlet smells and drains slowly, water may back up or seep from the joint. It is best if the pipeline can be seen and touched, and should be tested for several hours while being watched by someone to confirm that there is no detachment or overflow before it is handed over to automatic operation.
Do not connect the drain pipe to unknown pipes, sink overflow holes or outside the balcony. The building's drainage system, traps, and shared pipes are in varying conditions. Wrong connections will not only cause odor, but may also cause damage to neighbors.
Prefer to be conservative with sockets and extension cords
The dehumidifier draws a lot of current when running. It is advisable to use a socket on the wall that is in good condition. The plug should be inserted all the way and kept dry. Unless necessary, do not share extension cords or the same multi-hole socket with electric heaters, electric cookers, and dryers; if you see plugs that are loose, discolored, or hot to the touch, stop using them and check them. Before going out for a long time, make sure that the water tank is properly installed, the full water stop function is normal, and the machine is placed on a flat surface.
Filter cleaning is more useful than fragrance
Dust accumulation on the filter will reduce air flow and make it easier for humid environments to accumulate odors. Clean the filter and water tank according to the frequency of use. Wash and dry the water tank before putting it back in place. If there is a musty smell in the room, look back to find the source of water seepage from the window frame, condensation on the wall, or leakage from the cabinet. Dehumidifiers can control moisture in the air and cannot fix problems in buildings where water continues to enter. Treat it as a part of environmental management rather than a one-size-fits-all solution to cover up moisture, so that removal will not become more tiring.
It is not necessary to pursue the lower the humidity setting, the better
Different families have different feelings of comfort, and excessive indoor dryness may not necessarily be comfortable. It can be adjusted according to whether the clothes are hung in the home, if there are people with allergies, the amount of wood work and the actual feeling, and it can be combined with opening windows for ventilation and air conditioning for dehumidification. If a large amount of water must be dumped every day, it is worth recording the time, room and weather to check whether there are specific walls, windows or equipment that are constantly getting water. When buying a machine, also pay attention to whether the product has full-water shutdown, dumping safety, and complies with the voltage used in Taiwan; these are not marketing fine print, but the safety foundation for long-term use.
Keep a record of the current situation before and after construction begins
Before starting any home equipment or decoration adjustment, take photos of the panorama, joints, corners and original equipment markings; after completion, record the test methods, abnormal sounds, material models and warranty contact information. This information is not intended to predict the occurrence of disputes, but to allow the next person to understand the original condition when repairing, subletting, selling or handing over the property in the future. When a problem is discovered, you should first stop using it in a way that may cause damage, and avoid dismantling and modifying unfamiliar water, electricity, gas or wall structures in a hurry. By keeping good records, repairs will be judged faster and expenditures will be more easily explained.
New knowledge on air-conditioning power consumption and Taiwan climate maintenance regulations in recent years (2025-2026 current situation)
With the high temperatures in summer breaking historical records and the adjustment of electricity price structure in recent years, the latest statistics from the Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs show that air-conditioning equipment accounts for more than 47% of residential electricity consumption in summer. Many people mistakenly believe that if the air conditioner is not cold, they only need to "replenish the refrigerant." However, in fact, refrigerant is not naturally consumed during normal operation in a closed circuit. If the refrigerant is insufficient, it means that there are micro leaks in the copper pipes or joints. Simply replenishing the air conditioner will only treat the symptoms but not the root cause. Refrigerant leakage will aggravate the high temperature overload of the compressor and shorten its service life.
According to Taiwan's standard operating specifications for air-conditioning projects, it is recommended that professional technicians with a refrigeration and air-conditioning decoration technician license perform "full machine high-pressure water washing and evaporator deep sterilization" every 1 to 2 years for detached air-conditioning indoor units. Especially in the humid summer in the Shuangbei Basin, the air drum and water collection tray are easy to breed black mold and jelly-like biofilm. This is also the main reason for the sour smell in the air-conditioning outlet and the backflow of the drainage pipe. Regular maintenance can maintain CSPF (Air Conditioning Seasonal Performance Factor) level one energy efficiency level, which can save an average household 15% to 20% of air conditioning electricity bills every year.
Autonomous simple maintenance vs professional maintenance safety red line
- Homeowners can do by themselves: Remove and clean the nylon filter regularly every 2 to 3 weeks (rinse with clean water and dry in a cool place, do not expose it to the sun to avoid deformation and embrittlement); clean the air outlet blades of the indoor unit with a dry cloth; check whether there is any accumulation of debris within 50 cm around the outdoor unit that hinders heat dissipation.
- Professional technicians must be entrusted according to regulations: Refrigerant pressure testing and leakage repair welding, high-pressure cleaning of indoor unit air drums and aluminum fins with liquid chemicals, reset of the drainage slope of hidden cold water pipes in the ceiling, and 220V dedicated power circuit configuration and leakage circuit breaker replacement.
