Say goodbye to secondary pollution of indoor dust: What is a central dust collection system?
In urban life in Taiwan, air pollution and allergens are pain points for many families. Although many people have bought high-end handheld vacuum cleaners (such as Dyson) or sweeping robots, during the vacuuming process, the hot air discharged from the rear of the vacuum cleaner often blows up the smaller PM2.5 suspended particles and mold spores on the ground and scatters them in the air, causing serious "indoor air secondary pollution". If the filter inside the vacuum cleaner is not replaced regularly, the exhaust will often carry an unpleasant musty smell. In order to solve this problem, when European and American single-family villas are built, a "Central Vacuum System" is often included as a standard feature. Is it possible for this healthy home appliance that can achieve "dust-free exhaust" to be introduced into condominium buildings in Taipei or New Taipei?
The operating principle and three core advantages of central dust collection
The structure of the central dust collection system is very much like a set of "vacuum cleaners buried in the wall":
1. The host is placed in non-residential areas: The system will install a super-powerful vacuum cleaner host on a balcony, computer room or basement away from the living area. The main unit is equipped with a large-capacity dust bag and a high-efficiency filter.
2. Concealed pipes in the wall connect each room: 2-inch (approximately 50.8mm) special PVC pipes extend from the main unit and are embedded in the wall or ceiling mezzanine. At the end, "dust collection inlets (Inlets)" similar to sockets are set in the corners of each room.
3. Plug and play hose: When cleaning, homeowners only need to take a lightweight 9-meter or 12-meter hose and plug it into the dust collection socket on the wall. The low-voltage control line (24V) inside the socket will be automatically connected to start the host far away on the balcony. Dust and garbage will be sucked directly to the main unit on the balcony along the pipe, while tiny exhaust gases will be directly discharged to the outdoors. Its advantages include:
1. The exhaust gas is directly discharged to the outdoors without any dust being raised indoors, which is a great savior for families with allergic children.
2. Because the host is installed on the balcony, there is no need to consider weight and volume. Its motor is extremely powerful and can suck up stubborn dirt deep in the carpet.
3. You can only hear the rustling sound of air being sucked in, but not the harsh roar of the motor. Cleaning does not disturb your family's rest.
Fatal problems in Taipei building decoration construction: beam penetration and air tightness requirements
Although the central dust collection system has significant advantages, when installed in apartments or collective buildings in the greater Taipei area, water and electricity construction will face the following hard technical bottlenecks:
1. The routing and beam penetration restrictions of 2-inch thick pipes (maximum bottleneck): The outer diameter of PVC pipes dedicated to central dust collection is as high as 5 Centimeters or more, and in order to prevent paper scraps or hair from clogging the pipe, ordinary 90-degree elbows must not be used at the turns of the pipes, and a large-radius "sweep elbow" must be used. In the Taipei building, ceiling heights are limited and densely packed with huge concrete beams. Because water and electricity exposed pipes are strictly prohibited by regulations from penetrating the main beam structure, when these 5-centimeter thick pipes are to span beams and columns, they must go through false beams or suspended ceilings, which will significantly reduce the height of the ceiling and create a sense of oppression in the room.
2. Extremely high standards of pipeline air tightness: All stainless steel or PVC dust collection pipes embedded in the wall must be thoroughly glued with special PVC glue during construction and splicing. As long as there is a slight air leakage in any joint in the pipeline, the vacuum suction power of the entire system will decline sharply. Once the cement is sealed or the ceiling is nailed, it will be extremely difficult to locate and repair the subsequent air leakage points, which will test the meticulousness of the master's construction.
The installation budget and construction period of the central dust collection system in Taiwan
If you want to install a central dust collection system in a house of about 40 square meters in Taipei, the approximate cost is as follows:
* The cost of the main unit and vacuum hose accessories is about NT$ 45,000 to NT$ 85,000.
* Including special anti-static PVC pipes, long elbows, low-voltage control wires and socket covers, the material cost is about NT$ 15,000 to NT$ 25,000.
* As it involves wall trenching, ceiling placement and strict air tightness testing, the salary is approximately NT$ 25,000 to NT$ 45,000. The construction period usually takes 3 to 5 working days and must be completed before the plastering and ceiling frame construction.
The overall total construction cost is approximately NT$ 85,000 to NT$ 150,000. Although this is a large investment in home appliances, its service life is as long as 15-20 years, and the long-term depreciation cost is actually lower than that of a cordless vacuum cleaner that is frequently replaced.
Business acquisitions and businessmen’s long-term asset thinking: the premium value of green and healthy homes
For real estate businessmen who focus on the resale of luxury homes or the development of healthy apartments, In Taipei, where air pollution and allergy issues have attracted much attention, packaging the property as a "whole-house medical-grade dust-free and allergy-free residence" can accurately target top-of-the-pyramid buyers or high-end foreign tenants who have sufficient budgets and value health care. In terms of marketing, this system has a strong sense of visual technology, which can significantly widen the grade gap with ordinary decoration objects and create properties for the property. When evaluating an old house for renovation, if the height of the building allows, budgeting for central dust collection is a smart tactic to increase the added value of the asset and accelerate the sale rate (transaction speed).
The Ministry of Economic Affairs' latest "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" and the key points of electricity safety in old houses
Due to the popularity of high-power household appliances (such as air fryers, microwave ovens, dishwashers, instantaneous electric water heaters, and IH furnaces) in recent years, the Energy Administration of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has revised the "Regulations on Consumer Electrical Equipment Installation" many times to strictly require the diversion and protection mechanisms of residential electricity circuits. Statistics show that more than 30% of building fires in Taiwan are caused by electrical factors, among which "old wire insulation deteriorates and short circuits", "socket contacts are oxidized and loose, poor contact" and "non-fuse switch (NFB) overloaded and failed to trip" are the three main fatal causes.
Old apartments in Shuangbei that are more than 30 years old have a total original designed power capacity of only 30A to 40A, and several rooms often share the same 1.6mm or 2.0mm circuit. In the modern standard safety configuration, kitchen electrical cabinets, bathroom equipment, and air-conditioning and heating machines must all be equipped with 5.5mm² dedicated circuits (single circuit and single socket). It is recommended that the main switch box be upgraded to a busbar (Busbar) integrated distribution board, and the total amperage is increased to 75A or 100A (a qualified electrical appliance contractor needs to be entrusted to Taipower to review the additional power capacity).
Residential electricity self-test and regular inspection checklist
- Appearance and temperature of the socket: Touch the outer cover of the commonly used socket lightly with the back of your hand. If it feels lukewarm or if you find that the plastic socket is yellowed and charred, or the plug is loose and shaking after being plugged in, it means that the internal copper plate clamping force is exhausted or the contact resistance is too high, and you should immediately cut off the power and replace it.
- Regular testing of leakage circuit breakers (ELCB): For leakage circuit breakers in humid places such as balconies, bathrooms, and kitchen sinks, regulations require that the "TEST button" on the switch be pressed once every 1 to 3 months to confirm that it can automatically trip and cut off the power supply instantly.
- Serial connection and overloading of extension cords are strictly prohibited: Extension cords should be purchased with 2.0mm thick wire diameter products that have CNS certification and automatic overload power-off protection. Do not share the same extension cord with high energy-consuming appliances to ensure zero hidden danger to life and property at home.
